During this game we create a city, a castle together using several different things, for example card board and papers. The city that we build could be the place where we live or where we would like to live.

Items thrown away can be rebuilt into something new and exciting! Junk sculptures provide an opportunity to experiment with non-traditional materials. The process involves sorting, selecting, arranging, and assembling.

Discussion

Instructions:

Discuss, by looking at photos or after having a walk, what do we have in our neighbourhood. After that, we can start the planning! The children should tell what they want to put in the city. Use large paper boxes or thick cardboard ones for the play. The starting point (e.g., the nursery building) is glued to the base of the city by the adult and the children continue to “build” the city. We don’t have to stick to a realistic representation. The project can be done for several days (around five days), to demonstrate children what it is like to deal with an idea, a series of thoughts, a task for a long period of time.

Planning

After that, we can start the planning! The children should tell what they want to put in the city.

Learning how to plan is a very important thing. It is especially useful for children who have difficulties starting or stopping activities, for those who have sensory integration problem.

Build the city

Instructions:

The starting point (e.g., the nursery building) is glued to the base of the city by the adult and the children continue to “build” the city. We don’t have to stick to a realistic representation. The project can be done for several days (around five days), to demonstrate children what it is like to deal with an idea, a series of thoughts, a task for a long period of time.

Build a castle

Instructions:

Another idea is to build a castle using found objects like a cereal box or milk carton. Decorate the outside of the cereal box or milk carton and toilet paper roll (or use a paper towel roll for additional height). Glue the toilet paper roll or paper towel roll to the corners for the box. If you have additional toilet paper rolls, get creative by making little people to live in the castle.

Exploring unusual objects around us - Junk Sculpture

Instructions:

For materials, think, corks, pipe cleaners, buttons, popsicle sticks, egg cartons, dried out markers (use the caps) broken crayons, or empty cereal boxes. Using your imagination, build a pretend world or try to replicate your neighborhood!
